21 imagesTake a personal journey into the wonders of wild Africa as seen through the lens of master photographer Frans Lanting. The allure of Africa to a photographer is powerful. It has some of the most celebrated landscapes on earth, from the Serengeti Plains and the Okavango Delta to the jungles of the Congo, the deserts of Namibia, and the otherworldly island of Madagascar. Africa is home to some of the world’s most iconic and most endangered animals—elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, cheetahs. And it is home to our closest cousins: chimps, bonobos, gorillas, and their distant relatives, the lemurs of Madagascar. INTO AFRICA takes visitors on a grand tour through the wonders of the African landscape as seen through Lanting’s lens. Over the past three decades his images have created an enduring vision of the continent’s wildlife and wild places—and what is at stake. Lanting’s landmark exhibition, INTO AFRICA, opened at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in June 2015 and will be on display there until the summer of 2016.
